How to Become a Mining Engineer

Mining engineers turn a mineral deposit into a safe, working mine. Here's how to get there, from the school subjects that matter to your first graduate role.

Engineer

Mining engineers decide how a deposit gets mined. They design the pit or the underground workings, plan what gets mined and when, and make sure it's done safely and at a cost that works. It's a degree-level job with a lot of time on site, especially early on.

At a glance

  • Where you'll work: open-pit and underground mines, technical services offices, remote operations centres, consultancies.
  • Usual way in: an engineering degree majoring in mining engineering.
  • Uni needed? Yes.
  • Time to qualify: usually four years of full-time study.
  • Rosters: FIFO or DIDO for site roles; office roles are usually residential.

What the job involves

  • Designing open pits and underground mines.
  • Planning and scheduling production, from next week's plan to the life-of-mine plan.
  • Choosing equipment and working out costs.
  • Ventilation, ground control and drill and blast design.
  • Checking that plans are safe and actually work on the ground.

At school

  • Advanced maths. It's the main entry requirement for most engineering degrees.
  • Physics and chemistry.
  • English. Engineers write reports, plans and safety documents all the time.
  • Computing, design or technical drawing if your school offers them.
  • Robotics clubs, science projects or work experience all help show you like solving practical problems.

Check the entry requirements of the universities you're interested in early. Some list specific maths and science subjects.

How to qualify

The standard route is a bachelor's degree in engineering with a mining engineering major. Expect subjects like:

  • Engineering maths, mechanics and programming.
  • Geology and rock mechanics.
  • Open-pit and underground mine design.
  • Drill and blast, ventilation and mine planning.
  • Geotechnical engineering, safety, environment and mining economics.
  • Data analysis and mine automation.

Can't get straight into the degree? Many universities run bridging, foundation or associate-degree programs that lead into it.

Your first job

Start looking for industry experience from first year. Vacation programs, paid internships, site visits and casual work with contractors or survey teams all count. In your final year, apply for graduate programs.

Job titles to search for:

  • Graduate Mining Engineer
  • Graduate Planning Engineer
  • Graduate Drill and Blast Engineer
  • Graduate Geotechnical Engineer
  • Graduate Technical Services Engineer
  • Production Engineer

Most graduate programs rotate you through planning, drill and blast, geotechnical and production teams. That's how you learn how a mine really runs.

Tickets and training

Your degree is the main qualification. On site you'll also need inductions, a medical and the standard safety training. Registration as an engineer is voluntary in some countries and required in others. Check the rules with the engineering body where you plan to work.

Where it can lead

Graduate Engineer → Planning, Production, Drill and Blast or Geotechnical Engineer → Senior Engineer → Superintendent or Technical Services Manager → Mine Manager, Operations Manager or Consultant

Some engineers stay technical and specialise in mine design, scheduling, ventilation or automation. Others move into operations leadership, project development or consulting.

What employers look for

  • Sound safety judgement. A plan that hits its target but puts people at risk isn't a good plan.
  • Confidence with data and mine planning software.
  • A willingness to learn from operators and tradespeople.
  • Clear communication with crews, managers and contractors.
  • Resilience for regional or FIFO work.

Is it for you?

It suits you if you enjoy solving practical, numbers-based problems and want a professional career that takes you out on site.
