Why are mines looking at electrification?

Mining is an energy-intensive business.

Large haul trucks, loaders, drills, underground vehicles, processing plants and other equipment can consume enormous amounts of energy. Diesel has traditionally been one of the primary fuels for mobile equipment, while electricity has powered many fixed processing and infrastructure systems.

As companies look for ways to reduce emissions and improve energy efficiency, electrification becomes an increasingly attractive option.

Electric motors can be highly efficient, and some operations are investigating combinations of grid electricity, renewable energy, battery storage and other technologies.

For underground mines, electrification can provide another potential advantage: reducing diesel emissions and heat underground.

That can have implications for ventilation requirements and the working environment.

Electric equipment requires different skills

One of the biggest changes for workers could be the type of technical expertise required to maintain equipment.

A conventional diesel engine and a battery-electric powertrain are very different systems.

Electric equipment can involve high-voltage batteries, sophisticated power electronics, electric motors, charging infrastructure and advanced control systems. Workers maintaining these systems require appropriate training and procedures.

This could create growing demand for electricians, electrical engineers, instrumentation technicians and workers with specialist high-voltage experience.

At the same time, traditional diesel skills won't disappear overnight.

Mining fleets are expensive assets, and diesel-powered equipment will remain part of many operations for years. Mines will also continue to need mechanical tradespeople for equipment that remains diesel-powered, hydraulic, mechanical or hybrid.

The transition is therefore likely to be gradual rather than an overnight replacement of one technology with another.

New opportunities for apprentices and tradespeople

Electrification could be particularly interesting for people choosing a trade.

A worker entering an apprenticeship today could have a career spanning several different generations of mining equipment.

That makes adaptability important.

Someone who starts with electrical fundamentals and later develops expertise in industrial automation, battery systems, high-voltage equipment or mobile equipment could potentially move into emerging areas of the industry.

Mechanical tradespeople can also benefit from developing electrical knowledge.

The traditional boundaries between mechanical and electrical work are becoming less rigid as equipment becomes more integrated.

Safety becomes even more important

High-voltage systems bring their own hazards.

Workers need appropriate training, isolation procedures, personal protective equipment and site-specific authorisation before working on high-voltage equipment.

The presence of large battery systems also introduces different considerations around damage, thermal events and emergency response.

That means electrification isn't simply a matter of replacing a diesel engine with an electric motor. It requires new procedures, training, infrastructure and emergency planning.

For workers, understanding those systems will be an increasingly valuable part of staying safe.

Is electrification going to eliminate diesel jobs?

Probably not in the short term.

The resources industry is enormous and operates a huge variety of equipment across different environments. Some machines are easier to electrify than others, and individual projects have different power, distance and infrastructure requirements.

What is more likely is a gradual diversification of the skills required on site.

Diesel mechanics may increasingly work alongside electrical trades. Control systems specialists may work with traditional maintenance teams. Engineers may manage hybrid energy systems involving renewable generation, batteries and conventional power.

For FIFO workers, the biggest lesson is to keep learning.

The resources industry has always evolved with technology. Electrification is simply the next major change.

For people prepared to update their skills, it could represent an opportunity rather than a threat.
