Run by BHP Mitsubishi Alliance, Peak Downs is an open-pit mine producing high-quality hard coking coal about 31km south-east of Moranbah in Queensland's Bowen Basin, on Barada Barna country. Operating since 1972, it's one of Australia's largest coal mines by recoverable reserves, mining seams more than 300m below surface for steelmakers worldwide.
