Mining isn’t just for mining engineers and geologists. If you’re at university and thinking about your career, the resources sector might be a much bigger opportunity than you realise.
Modern mining companies employ people across engineering, science, technology, environment, business, health and safety, logistics, and more. And the numbers back it up: Australia’s mining industry employs around 314,500 people, with employment continuing to grow and median weekly earnings well above the all‑industry average. At the same time, industry bodies flag ongoing shortages in disciplines like engineering, metallurgy, and geoscience.
The “Obvious” Mining Degrees
1. Mining Engineering
Mining engineers work on mine design, production, planning, scheduling, drilling and blasting, safety, and optimisation. It’s a core operational role with strong international potential and clear pathways into senior technical and leadership positions.
2. Geology
Geologists help companies understand what’s under the ground. Work can span exploration, resource definition, grade control, geological modelling, and mine geology. If you like science, fieldwork, and problem-solving, it’s worth a close look.
3. Metallurgy
Mining doesn’t end when the rock comes out of the ground. Metallurgists work on mineral processing, recovery, optimisation, plant performance, testing, and process development. As more focus shifts to processing and value-adding, these roles become even more strategic.
4. Environmental Science
Mining companies need people working on environmental approvals, water management, rehabilitation, biodiversity, monitoring, and closure planning. Mine rehabilitation alone can represent decades of work beyond a mine’s operational life.
5. Surveying
Mine surveyors determine exactly where everything is. Their work covers mine development, pit surveys, underground operations, stockpiles, infrastructure, and mapping. It’s a highly practical application of technical skills with direct impact on day-to-day operations.
The Roles People Don’t Always Associate With Mining
Data and Technology
Mines generate enormous quantities of data from autonomous fleets, sensors, processing plants, and planning systems. That creates opportunities for people with skills in data science, analytics, software, automation, AI, systems integration, and cybersecurity.
Recent research on mining’s digital transformation highlights growing demand for digital literacy, data analysis, and other non‑traditional mining skills, especially as companies integrate new technologies into existing operations.
Health and Safety
Mining is heavily focused on risk management. That drives careers in occupational health, safety, training, risk management, and emergency response, roles that exist on site, in regional offices, and in corporate teams.
Supply Chain and Logistics
A remote mine needs constant flows of fuel, food, equipment, spare parts, and consumables. Supply chain and logistics professionals plan, coordinate, and optimise those flows, often across complex, multi-site networks.
Finance and Business
Mining companies are still businesses. They need accountants, commercial managers, procurement specialists, HR professionals, economists, legal teams, and communications professionals. Many of these roles are based in capital cities or regional hubs, with regular site engagement rather than full-time FIFO.
Do Graduates Have to Go FIFO?
No. There are FIFO graduate programs, but also residential roles, metropolitan corporate positions, laboratories, consulting firms, suppliers, and technology companies. FIFO is one part of the industry, not the definition of a mining career.
Current graduate opportunities often involve structured site rotations, mentoring, and technical development rather than simply dropping a graduate into a remote job and leaving them to figure it out.
The Bigger Opportunity
The mining industry is in the middle of a technological and energy-transition shift. That means the next generation of mining workers will likely need to combine traditional industry knowledge with new technical capabilities.
The most valuable people may be those who can operate across disciplines, for example:
- Mining operations + data and analytics
- Electrical + automation and controls
- Mechanical + diagnostics and reliability
- Geology + 3D modelling and resource estimation
- Metallurgy + process control and optimisation
- Environment + GIS, monitoring tech, and data
If you’re a graduate, you don’t have to fit a narrow “mining” box. The sector is wide enough to reward hybrid skills, curiosity, and a willingness to learn on the job.
