Four pathways into WA's resources sector, and how you could take one of them

So instead of dwelling on the modelling in CME's Unearthing Potential report, this piece looks at the human side of it: four illustrative career pathways the report itself uses to show what "the resources workforce" actually looks like in practice, and what each path could mean for someone considering it today.
A quick note on the profiles below: the report presents these as anonymised, illustrative examples "drawn from publicly available published sources," used to demonstrate the diversity of occupations in the sector rather than as a scientific sample. We've kept the report's own names and details. Think of them less as case studies and more as a sketch of four genuinely different ways into the same industry.
1. From the pit to the engineering office
Charlotte started her resources career as a teenager, working FIFO and learning the industry from the ground up, operating crushers, graders, trucks and excavators. After eight years in operations, she began studying mining engineering part-time while continuing to work FIFO, graduated with First Class Honours, and moved into an engineering role at a nickel mine in WA's northern Goldfields.
What this path needs: willingness to start in an operational role, a long runway of on-the-job experience before study, and access to a part-time engineering qualification that can be studied around a FIFO roster. It's a genuine pathway from entry-level operations into a professional, degree-qualified career, no university entry score required at 18.
2. Retraining into a trade, mid-career
Tilly was working in administration when she decided to retrain as an electrician, completing trade qualifications and further study while raising three children. By 2025 she was a qualified electrician working on Woodside's Pluto Train 2 project near Karratha.
What this path needs: an apprenticeship or adult trade-training pathway, and, importantly, an industry and employers willing to support career changers balancing study with family responsibilities. The report explicitly calls out apprenticeships and vocational pathways as core infrastructure for realising WA's resources opportunity, not a fallback option.
3. Data and mathematics into mine planning
Mia entered the resources sector through computing and mathematical sciences, applying her skills to modelling, optimisation and automation. At Fortescue, she helped lead integrated planning and remote operations across the Pilbara; under her leadership, one planning tool reduced scenario-planning time from days to minutes.
What this path needs: a computing, mathematics or data science background rather than a geology or engineering degree. As mine sites become more automated and remotely operated, a trend the report specifically flags as reshaping the skills the sector needs, this is one of the fastest-growing entry points into resources, and one of the least understood by people outside the industry.
4. Environmental science into water stewardship
Lucas' interest in protecting the natural environment led him to study marine biology and environmental science before joining WA's resources sector. At BHP's Western Australia Iron Ore business, he built a career focused on water stewardship and protecting environmental values in mining regions, now working as a Principal in the environment team managing water resources and the long-term health of local catchments.
What this path needs: an environmental science, ecology or related degree, and an interest in the operational side of environmental management rather than policy or advocacy alone. It's a reminder that "resources sector job" includes roles whose entire purpose is protecting the environment the sector operates in.
What these four have in common
Different entry points, different qualifications, different timelines, but each pathway lines up with one of the broad skill categories the report identifies as central to WA's resources future: technical and trade skills, automation and remote-operations capability, digital and data skills, and environmental and regional capability. None of the four started with an engineering or geology degree from age 18; three of the four changed direction significantly partway through their working life.
The report also points to a fifth pathway that doesn't have an individual profile attached but matters just as much: greater Indigenous participation in emerging roles, alongside a broader push for stronger regional workforces and transferable, exportable skills that could take WA expertise into other sectors and other countries.
Where the opportunities are opening up
These aren't hypothetical career tracks. The State Government's own pipeline update, released alongside the CME report, points to more than $50 billion in major projects currently underway, from LNG (Scarborough, Crux, Jansz-Io Compression) to iron ore (Western Ridge, Brockman Syncline 1) to critical minerals (the Eneabba Rare Earths Refinery and Mt Holland expansion), each one needing its own construction crews, operators, tradespeople, engineers, data specialists and environmental teams.
If you recognise yourself in any of the four pathways above, hands-on operator considering further study, tradesperson or career-changer looking at an apprenticeship, data or maths background looking for a technical industry to apply it in, or environmental science graduate wanting field-based impact, the report's underlying message is that WA's resources sector has room, and long-term demand, for all four.
